Clinical trials enable researchers to try new treatments, tests, drugs, devices or procedures to support the prevention, detection, diagnoses or treatment of medical conditions and learn how to manage diseases. They require both ethical approval from a Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) and governance authorisation to commence at any SA Health site.
There are two types of trials:
- interventional clinical trials assign participants to different treatment groups and compare outcomes
- observational clinical trials observe participants but do not influence their treatments, focusing instead on what happens in different environments.
